[trunk] String tuning data and several instruments removed from instruments.xml (long ago!)

Miwarre
Hi,

A while ago I noticed that string tuning data ("Tablature" tag) for stringed instruments has been removed from instruments.xml; recently I also noticed that several instruments (for instance the whole lute family) has been removed as well.

Today, while playing with the SVN repository browser, I could determined that this happened with rev. 3987 (3 February 2011!). Was this intentional?

If yes, I wonder why. If not, is it the case to restore those info? (in case I can do it, as I have changes to propose for some instruments anyway).

Thanks,

M.

Hi,

Attached is an extended instruments.xml for trunk. Changes:

*) added the data present in rev. 3961 and disappeared in rev. 3987 (mostly referring to instruments of the lute family and to string tuning data)

*) Changed the "Guitars" section title to "Fretted Instruments" (no offense intended to guitarists, but having lutes or shamisen or sitar under "Guitars" sounds odd...)

*) Revised the viol family to attested instruments adding string tuning data; also moved the family after the whole violin family (after the double bass) rather than in the middle of it (after violas).

*) Removed the tag <stafftype>tablature</stafftype> as it is broken at the moment; this involved removing the tablature-only instrument versions (guitar, bass and some other). I'll see what's wrong with it and I'll put it back, if necessary.

If there are no objections and nobody else does it in the next few days, I can commit the change.

Thanks,

M.

I have no objection except I would keep "Guitars", the number of
guitarists is immensely bigger than the number of lutes, shamisen and
sitar together. If it's so odd, then I would make two categories,
"Guitars" containing bass, ukulele, tab/no tab and "Others fretted
instruments".

Btw, mea maxima culpa, I think I'm the guilty one for the removals of
all this info. I'm very sorry for the disturbance.

Virtualization & Cloud Management Using Capacity Planning
Cloud computing makes use of virtualization - but cloud computing
also focuses on allowing computing to be delivered as a service.

I agree <lol>! Even if I only play early music, at the moment I am in touch with only one lutenist (theorbist, actually); by chance I know a sitarist (and no 'shamisenist'), but I have lost the count of guitarists...

The idea to split the category between guitars and others makes much sense to me, especially because someone looking for the some of the 'others' may not think to look among the guitars.

Please do not be sorry: it has been the occasion to review several small details.

Incidentally, is the German name "Zink" an accepted English equivalent for "cornett" (with two 't': the Renaissance wooden wind instrument with a trumpet-like mouth-piece)?
Does instrument.xml uses Zink rather than "cornett" to avoid confusion with the "cornet" (one 't', a kind of trumpet)?
According to the English Wikipedia, "Zink" is also used, but some cross-confirmation would be welcome.

Anyway, I'll split the guitars (sounds odd, doesn't it?) and I'll commit the updated file.

Thanks,

M.
